Grandia, StarTwo style!

Grandia2019_byStartwo

It’s a joyous day for any Japanese rpg aficionado! One of the most beloved titles from the 90’s era named Grandia, together with its first sequel, Grandia II, gets an HD release today.

Oh Grandia, how long has it been? Our nostalgia filled souls already have your soundtrack blaring for all to hear (well, not on the stereo because it’s still daytime… we’re respectful neighbors) and we celebrate by drawing your sweet, memorable characters!
This game might not be the best jrpg out there, the plot is quite simplistic and the most demanding rpg gourmand among us might quickly decide to snub it, however, for us two, it was a hit straight to our gamer hearts.

Without geeking out too much, here’s what we believe the game offers very, very well:

• An awesome combination of medias: engaging story that keeps you moving forward, fun game mechanics, great music evoking the feeling of exploration.

• The feeling that you’re truly going on an adventure and on the search of an ancient civilization.

• Well written characters that are equally appealing visually, with their looks perfectly representing their roles and personality.

On our image, from left to right we got Justin, a troublemaker of a kid, dreaming of becoming an adventurer and honor the legacy of his ancestors, Sue, the cutest girl in town, but with wits and attitude to match and Feena, an adventurer from the New World, with a few well kept secrets. And there’s also Puffy in accessory mode on Sue’s head.
And now we get to travel by their side once again, on their quest to reach The End Of The World and maybe, even go beyond it because as we know, the World never ends and neither do adventures.

Charming, delightful, a bit frustrating at times but very well paced, Grandia is the perfect treat for this weekend. Hurray!

Book of Zhu – Ing Rao Event Image

CG005_steps

Today we bring you a different peek into art we’ve done for Book of Zhu, a visual novel placed in a setting heavily based on martial arts fantasy. A glimpse of some steps of an event image of Ing Rao in the Palace’s Kitchen.

We posted Ing Rao in her chef’s outfit previously and she has one of the best quotes that can be applied to mostly anything to keep your motivation going. It goes like this:

“We’ve all got different Mak Ti, for you it’s fighting for me it’s cooking. What matters is that we both put our soul into whatever we do!”

We’ll take Ing Rao’s wise words and keep doing what we do, invigorated! She could think about a side job as being a motivational coach and we would register in a flash. But first, members discount maybe?

Here are more characters we’ve worked on:
Alternative outfits: Aya, Rani, The Empress and Eraeli.
Concept: Mika, Maru, Yi-Sunai and Zhu Half Dragons

Book of Zhu – Half-Dragons

Hybrid-ZhuDragons_byStarTwo

It’s time to share a design of a race with dragon ancestry that we’ve made for Book of Zhu. What it means is that we got to play around to create a hybrid creature, making it mainly Zhuni (human features) with Zhu Dragon characteristics.

There were several features that we looked forward to adopt as the Dragons themselves are majestic creatures with visible mana bursting through their scales since they create mana and chi in their own mana furnace and also their wings are covered in tiny scales that make them extremely tough.
As hybrids it seemed interesting for us to keep the mana bursts in several points, specially as a feature that would add impact in a fight, a punch or kick fuelled by an extra power to land it! We would think twice before stepping on their toes…

Here are more characters that we’ve worked on:
Alternative outfits: Aya, Rani, The Empress, Eraeli and Ing Rao.
Concept: Mika, Maru and Yi-Sunai

Book of Zhu – Ing Rao’s Chef Outfit

Here’s another character we did for Book of Zhu, today is Ing Rao’s turn in her Chef Outfit for when she moves to the Palace.

Not only is she prepared to fight whatever might come her way, she will also cook amazing things for you – we can totally vouch for Ing Rao’s cooking skills since she was hired to be a royal chef, so… Yeah. There’s only so much that connections can do, and if she’s keeping that position, we’re sure that she must be doing a great job!

Free time with Zelda – BOTW

LinkBotw_Startwo

With the weekend at our doorstep one of the things we’ll do is gleefully dive into the world of Hyrule with Link! We’re major fans of the Zelda series, but professional and adult life doesn’t allow us to play as much as we used to. But that’s not a complaint, after all you lose free time but you gain other rewarding things.

This weekend we’ll make sure to take another 10000 screenshots of the game, to draw inspiration from and share with you the results in a nearby future. Too bad this is a one player game, right?

Book of Zhu – Yi-Sunai

Standard

YiSunai_BookofZhu_StarTwoIt’s been a while since we shared some of the work we did for Book of Zhu so today we bring you another character we designed for it.

She is a very determined girl named Yi-Sunai but called “The Beast” based on her ability to draw on aspects of animals in combat and use parts of their traits which alter her appearance when used.

We had a lot of fun designing her and her slight feral feeling while keeping her outfit something possible to move in when engaging in fighting.

Here is a list of some of the characters we’ve worked on:
Alternative outfits: Aya, Rani, The Empress and Eraeli.
Concept: Mika and Maru

Shin Megami Tensei – Alice

Standard
SMTAlice

A dubious skill to gain from Alice, we don’t advise to follow through.

Today we’re bringing you a character from Megami Tensei franchise, a series we’ve been very much in love with, not only for the story but also for the magnificent lore created for the several games under its title.

It’s set in a cyberpunk/post-apocalyptic dark fantasy genre with alternative realms, demons and magic with its lore ranging from inspirations of mythology with elements of philosophy, religion and occultism. There’s always a constant feeling of only being able to rely on your own abilities against inevitable destruction.
So we admit it was impossible not to be immediately drawn into it, especially when the soundtracks lure you closer even more!

Alice here in particular is inspired by the main character of “Alice in Wonderland” from Lewis Carroll and its adaptation by Disney, obvious by the colours and clothes design. Her signature skill “Die for Me!” and “Mad Tea Party” even strengthen that idea, feeding off the original tale’s dark side with a queen that demands heads to be chopped off and Mad Hatter and March Hare openly adding to tea party largely lacking in common sense.

Her origins also mention that she might also be based on a myth of an Aryan (Indo-Iranian noble class) girl who died young. With her death came great power as she turned into a spirit, turning her insane. Her story was used to scare misbehaving children, with the threat to be visited at night and killed in order to become her “friend”.

In Portugal we have an uglier, meaner version with this behavior: The Sack Man. A sort of Krampus that sells off the misbehaving children, with other harsher versions describing him as a murderer receiving the brat from their own parents…

Between dying for friendship and being sold off or given to a murderer by disappointed parents… Hm, sorry Alice, if we get you in the game, we can’t exactly die for you! But we can have a tea party instead. We may be all mad at this point, so we might as well enjoy it.
