Book of Zhu – Yi-Sunai

Standard

YiSunai_BookofZhu_StarTwoIt’s been a while since we shared some of the work we did for Book of Zhu so today we bring you another character we designed for it.

She is a very determined girl named Yi-Sunai but called “The Beast” based on her ability to draw on aspects of animals in combat and use parts of their traits which alter her appearance when used.

We had a lot of fun designing her and her slight feral feeling while keeping her outfit something possible to move in when engaging in fighting.

Here is a list of some of the characters we’ve worked on:
Alternative outfits: Aya, Rani, The Empress and Eraeli.
Concept: Mika and Maru

There’s more about the project right at the Book of Zhu webpage.

Shin Megami Tensei – Alice

Standard
SMTAlice

A dubious skill to gain from Alice, we don’t advise to follow through.

Today we’re bringing you a character from Megami Tensei franchise, a series we’ve been very much in love with, not only for the story but also for the magnificent lore created for the several games under its title.

It’s set in a cyberpunk/post-apocalyptic dark fantasy genre with alternative realms, demons and magic with its lore ranging from inspirations of mythology with elements of philosophy, religion and occultism. There’s always a constant feeling of only being able to rely on your own abilities against inevitable destruction.
So we admit it was impossible not to be immediately drawn into it, especially when the soundtracks lure you closer even more!

Alice here in particular is inspired by the main character of “Alice in Wonderland” from Lewis Carroll and its adaptation by Disney, obvious by the colours and clothes design. Her signature skill “Die for Me!” and “Mad Tea Party” even strengthen that idea, feeding off the original tale’s dark side with a queen that demands heads to be chopped off and Mad Hatter and March Hare openly adding to tea party largely lacking in common sense.

Her origins also mention that she might also be based on a myth of an Aryan (Indo-Iranian noble class) girl who died young. With her death came great power as she turned into a spirit, turning her insane. Her story was used to scare misbehaving children, with the threat to be visited at night and killed in order to become her “friend”.

In Portugal we have an uglier, meaner version with this behavior: The Sack Man. A sort of Krampus that sells off the misbehaving children, with other harsher versions describing him as a murderer receiving the brat from their own parents…

Between dying for friendship and being sold off or given to a murderer by disappointed parents… Hm, sorry Alice, if we get you in the game, we can’t exactly die for you! But we can have a tea party instead. We may be all mad at this point, so we might as well enjoy it.

“Street Fighter Tales” for Action X Team

Chun-Li, always a favourite of ours!

Art concept for “Street Fighter Tales” (click on the pictures to see them fullsize)

From 2016 to 2018 we worked with Action X Team on the project “Street Fighter Tales” and since its inspired in a videogame series that had been very present in our lives, we were thrilled when asked to do concept art and give it a slight twist in accordance to the script delivered.

We love to concept and in this case we had the extra challenge of thinking of the actor/actress/karateka that would fill the role. It was the first time we had that extra human factor while doing these concepts and having to make outfits that allowed a wide range of movements a.k.a. fighting action scenes not only for the camera but also for live action at events and stage shows!
From character sheets, to storyboard sequences and background images for live audiovisual interactive stage performances, we were thrilled to work on several steps of the process and areas that were completely new to us.

We had a blast and it was a specially rewarding feeling to see clothes come to life from our concepts (a sample is shown on the pictures) with the added responsibility to try and be loyal to the original characters.

★We hope you enjoyed it as well and as always, stay inspired★
