The safety of a tower when a familiar voice is heard from outside. Calling out to him would be giving his identity away, and when bad news are involved, there’s always second guessing.

On her way out, this Dame was suddenly stopped by hearing the voice of someone she used to know so well. From the square she can see the speaker, but the situation keeps her from reaching out to him and risk identifying the bringer of bad news.

Watching from afar for now, to later find information to arrange a safe rendezvous becomes imperative.

A Portuguese Folk Tale – Almond Trees ~ Lines

Here we go, another little snippet of lines underneath a finished illustration.

We shared its colour counterpart on our last post “A Portuguese Folktale – Almond Trees”. It spoke about the love that was almost cut short with the sickness of the “Northen Beauty”, doomed if not for the beautiful Almond Trees.

Despite the strain on getting it right, just like rendering hair, facial hair has its potential when it comes to therapeutic inking~

A Portuguese Folk Tale – Almond Trees

Back in primary school, we were first introduced to the myriad of people and empires that ruled over these lands that are now the country of Portugal.

From Celts to Romans, Suebi to Visigoths and finally, the Moors, all left a little of their inheritance behind and became part of the intricate tapestry that is the Portuguese past. Our beautiful region of Algarve, land of golden sand and crystalline waters, still shows clear signs of Moor presence, starting with its name, Algarve, which was Al-Gharb in the 8th century A.D. And among words, architecture, food and music, the Moors also left us the gorgeous almond trees.

With their characteristic beauty, a legend about almond trees seems inevitable, doesn’t it? Right you are! This lore is one of the most beloved stories passed down through the centuries, weaved with some veracity as many of the names and places existed and though it hints a rather romantic vision of invasion and conquest that we end up appreciating because we will always believe that love can conquer all.

Sit back with your favourite treat and let’s travel together through old lands under the regency of the Crescent Moon…

Sweet Valentine’s 2019

Devon and Rayil, to make your Valentine’s Day sweeter than candy♥

It’s a bird! It’s a plane! It’s… definitely not Superman.
We bring you not one, but two Cupids!
Devon and Rayil as vessels of love for your Valentine’s Day.
Ready and armed with the arrows of passion even if a bit unorthodox according to classical mythology. But passer-by be warned, their arrows are as strong as advertised!

No big boxes of candy nor shiny material gifts, this should be all about arrows!
According to literature and depictions, Cupid’s arrows come in two very different types, one is a sharp golden tip and the other is blunt and made of lead. While the golden one will make you lose control over your desires, the blunt type will create aversion and makes you run away. A great example of their effect is in the story of Apollo who taunted Cupid by calling him a lesser archer and as a result got shot by the golden arrow while the object of Apollo’s desire- Daphne, a naiad /water nymph- was shot by the blunt arrow, making her constantly deny and flee from Apollo’s advances. But the moment he corners her, she prays to her father- the river god Peneus- and she turns into a laurel tree. Which in turn becomes a sacred tree for Apollo. Not the ideal outcome of a love affair in our book…

There’s also a variation of the different effects regarding the different metals of the arrow. Gold for a gentle smite: easily cured; silver and steel will not be so kind as the resulting wounds of that love will never heal.

Other trivia mentions spicier imagery and symbology, but we rather keep this mild and PG.
And let’s also ignore that on our illustration, Devon might’ve just committed a self-critical shot right there. Rayil doesn’t mind♥

So in a nutshell…
Yes, it’s better to never cross a Cupid, just in case.

★Happy Valentine’s Day everyone, and stay inspired★

2018 – Here we go!

Standard
2018_STb

Before January ends, we want to wish you all a great 2018!!

The festivities are over, the year just started and we’re well into the working rhythm of the new year but it still feels like 2018 appeared out of nowhere, even if we welcome it with wide open arms!

The tic toc of Time keeps going, so let’s stay committed to the resolutions (ah yes, we mean you too! Don’t let yourself quit if it’s something that you believe is a tool that can get you closer to the person you want to be! But keep it positive, always. No need for bad energy that ruins your Karma★★).

With so many things on the list to focus on and, as always, searching methods on how to improve and keep learning more (never enough!), one of our resolutions is to give some space to better ourselves and balance the personal and work life, because the scale can’t just go tipping crazy to one side!
Controlling this workaholic streak we keep falling into is a priority from now on, since it has resulted in bumps on the road over time, specially health issues (which are stable now. Phew…).
Despite this, please don’t worry, we are aware that we have been posting seldom lately – mainly because sometimes we are asked not to share the works before they are made public by the client and we end up postponing in such a way that we lose track to post it later on…- We are resolute in changing this streak. We love sharing what we do with you and everyone that visits our dear Starlitden!

We hope you get some good vibes from us as we’re sending them out, trusting that we all keep striving and positively achieve our goals!
Stay inspired, everyone!★★

Bartkira StarTwo style! Vol 5

Standard

Bartkira_5_p210_teaser

Hello everyone!★★
Today we bring you the page we did for the Bartkira project – Vol.5. (in addition to the ones we did for Vol.4! Check the post about it ►here◄ )
For those who are not familiar with the project, here’s the description on the Bartkira Roadshow youtube channel:

Bartkira is an animated parody mash-up of The Simpsons and Akira. Based on an idea by Ryan Humphrey articulated through comics, the concept was expanded with the Bartkira project, a comic collaboration of Simpsons fans, curated by James Harvey. In association with the comic, Moon Animate Make-Up producer Kaitlin Sullivan pitched the idea of an animated trailer to match and with the work of over fifty artists, produced the Bartkira animated trailer.

We had a lot of fun once again, as expected, but there was more work involved due to the different characters and rhythm of the action.
Despite the slow pace, this gave us an opportunity to turn what could be considered a “boring” page into something more into the Simpsons’ Universe, but not without being worried on how to translate “Akira” into “Simpsons”.

Squidnapping! Squid smack!

In the end we decided to bring a story within a story, hence the “squidnapping”, making this our favourite page from the ones we made. Well, besides the one with the appearance of Sideshow Bob, because… It’s Sideshow Bob.

Here are some of the stages of the page and also some character studies we did to get a better grip of each one of them.
