Winter Sun ~ Lines

SolInvictusLines_StarTwo

This time it’s the linework behind the “Sol Invictus” piece, which in Latin means “unconquered” and “undefeated”, referring to a Sun god worshipped in the late Roman Empire as a patron to soldiers.

As per usual, let us bring you deeper into the meanings of the elements!

Since he is a Sun god, we chose themes that we feel that speak for the entity: sun, victory and fire.
The halo around him represents the sun rays basking the common mortal in its warmth and light, the laurel leaves and laurel motif on his belt represent victory, as his name prompts us. The circle floating over his hand is the alchemical symbol for the sun and the symbol at the center of his belt is an adaptation of the representation of the Manipura chakra, the third primary chakra according to Vedic tradition (associated with fire).
On his chest the gemstone is a Sunstone, which instils good nature, heightens intuition and allows the real self to shine though happily.
Finally the sunflowers, known to turn to the sun are all facing him, as they represent adoration, loyalty and longevity.

Wintertime Witch Season!

Berchta_StarTwo

Perchta, Berchte, Berta among other names. In modern days is a totem for the righteous.
“Rewarder of the generous and punisher of the bad, particularly lying children.”

Very well, “Winter Witch Season” can be overly dramatizing but it is a fact that until the 6th of January, in various parts of the world there were celebrations related to winter witches and goddesses.

While some of these witches were nice others were very admonishing, but most did call to your best behaviour. They protected the weak -and children’s souls who passed away among other traits- and maybe more importantly for the lucky ones, deliverers of good fortune and blessings. Unless you decided to stick to bad deeds and stepping out of your way to forsaken their specific rituals of the season.

Some entities would not be as forgiving, as among the benevolent ones there would be some like Berchta or Perchta – a goddess of Alpine paganism from the upper parts of the Alps- whose punishment could be somewhat absolute, as it involved having your stomach open, your insides pulled out and replaced with straw and pebbles…

Naughty or nice had a whole different kind of pressure. Quite an incentive to do good instead!

Winter Sun ~ Full

SolInvictus_StarTwo

The Sol Invictus shining the path.

There was a Sun god in the late Roman Empire, patron to soldiers, whose ritual was celebrated on the 25th December.

With the imagery of fire and light, we decided to portray Sol Invictus (latin for unconquered/undefeated Sun) so you can feel how he shines upon you, in hopes that you find the strength to work towards your Great Work, your Magnum Opus, your better self.

Introspect as much as you can and need, find what drives you and what you can do with your current situation and try to avoid being discouraged. But also, don’t blame others if they can’t support or walk with you because everyone is on their own stage of one’s path.

We wish you all the energy and drive needed to thrive and reach your better version and for those you wish well.

★StarTwo wishes you a Happy New Year 2020, everyone!★

Creature Feature – Enfield ~ Lines

EnfieldShoppingLines_Startwo

Even if it feels like Autumn just begun, with Halloween gone by it’s starting to feel like Winter really fast.
We’re holding ourselves to the current season though and as we try to appreciate roasted chestnuts and sweet wine, we’re sharing our Enfield’s lines with you.

By giving ourselves the challenge of creating a humanoid version, we tried to come up with a design that also felt modern and intriguing. Usually there’s a set time-length for these illustrations and we can say that this one pushed our time slot to the limit!
You can check our complete post about these Irish Chimeras and the colour version of the illustration here.

An Irish Mythical Creature – The Enfield

Standard

Myths and legends, there are so many of them throughout our immense world. Many came into existence as a means to interpret nature’s strength, the divine, the unexplained. But some also came from the need us humans have for security and protection. From such want, the Enfield was born.

Enfields are a lesser-known type of Chimera, a mythological creature made up of body parts of other animals. They are known to generally have the head of a fox, the body and forelegs of an eagle and the hind and rear legs of a wolf (some variations also add lion and greyhound parts into the mix). They are mainly associated with Ireland although records also place them in England. One thing is certain, the Enfield is unquestionably Celtic and of great importance to its chieftains.

A medieval Enfield

In Celtic tales, Enfields had the role of being the guardian of the leaders fallen in battle. The Celts believed in giving their dead a proper burial ceremony which gave them a motivational disadvantage as their enemies would try their best to steal the bodies of the chieftains and, to put it into milder words, disgrace them. This meant, in Celtic culture, that the deceased would be cursed to never find peace in the afterlife unless properly avenged.

The want for a guardian of their fallen, made the Celts conjure forward the Enfield, a fierce defender to protect the lifeless body of their chieftains, remaining by the dead man’s side and protecting the body from anyone with ill intent.

But not our rendition of an Enfield!

Curious and eager, as all young things are, his path has yet to burden him with such a grave task as guardian of the dead. Mind you, he doesn’t shun his future, an Enfield is proud of his legacy and grateful to those who have chosen him. But it is pumpkin season now and the Fairy Queen bestowed upon her humble vassals the possibility to become human for a day and go enjoy human things.

So this is where we caught our Enfield, in mid-transformation from chimera to human, eager and still cautious about undesirable eyes catching him off guard. Tonight he shall feast on hot minced meat and pumpkin pie before returning to his elders and learn the ways of the guardians of the Celtic Chieftains.

Happy Autumn once again and have a wonderful weekend and as always,
